The Role

The Commercial Manager provides end-to-end commercial and contractual leadership across a growing and diverse portfolio of projects.  From initial opportunity identification through to contract completion and close-out. Operating within a fast-paced SME environment, the role balances hands-on operational delivery with strategic foresight, ensuring commercial activities align with MVR’s wider business objectives.

The role exists to lead and embed robust commercial, contractual and supply chain operations across the organisation, ensuring disciplined governance, regulatory compliance, and effective risk management while enabling the business to deliver programmes, secure new work, and scale sustainably. By translating strategy into operational execution, the Commercial Manager provides clear commercial leadership, supports bids and live projects with strong financial and contractual oversight, strengthens supplier performance and resilience, and drives consistent best-practice ways of working.

Through close collaboration with leadership and delivery teams, the role ensures commercial decisions are timely, informed, and risk-aware, supporting innovation, operational excellence, long-term value creation, and responsible growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Line Management of XR Team
  • Day-to-day management of XR Team activities to meet agreed outputs within agreed estimates/budgets
  • Working with PMs and Engineering Leads to develop resource forecasts at short (2 week), medium (2 month) and long-term (5 month) timeframes, ensuring these are maintained on a rolling basis and that any resourcing issues (e.g. clashes) are escalated to the Director of Business Delivery for resolution
  • Leading the Sprint (short-term) and Resource Planning (medium and long-term) meetings to present the resource forecasts/plans to the wider team
  • Producing (working with technical team) robust cost (resource) and timeline estimates for XR activity
  • Supporting the ongoing development of MVR’s Engineering Processes, Standards, Tools and Techniques
  • Leading and mentoring a high-performing, motivated XR Team that can deliver MVR’s contracted deliverables and support future growth plans/opportunities
  • Representing MVR at internal and external Technical Reviews, ensuring that all risks, dependencies and assumptions are adequately defined, understood and being managed to protect the interests of Metaverse XR and its customers.
  • Effectively utilising XR Tech Leads to support day to day activity and drive efficiencies.

Specialist Knowledge and Specialist Skills

Essential:

  • Degree level qualification (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ practical experience in a commercial role within the defence industry.
  • In depth knowledge of defence contracting, terms and conditions, regulatory requirements, and industry trends.
  • Strong negotiation and commercial decision making skills.
  • Solid understanding of financial principles, reporting, and risk management.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.

Desireable:

  • Experience designing and implementing creative commercial solutions.
  • Experience working in a matrix organisation.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies.
